The Mukuru SPA has a population of approximately 400,000, including roughly 94,920 school-going children. However, there are only seven public schools and 150 non-formal schools serving this large student population. Out of the total school-going population, approximately 15,000 children attend the seven public schools, while an additional 33,000 go to non-formal schools.
Mukuru informal settlements currently lack effective waste management systems, resulting in the improper disposal of garbage in the settlement’s drainage systems and the Ngong River, which flows through Viwandani and Kwa Ruben. This haphazard waste disposal has been identified by residents as a significant contributor to flooding during the rainy seasons.
Despite its high population, Mukuru faces a shortage of proper markets and heavily relies on just 11 informal, small open-air markets within the settlements or the main city markets. Additionally, residents depend on numerous food vendors who operate small informal businesses throughout the various villages.
