This report provides an overview of the project’s implementation, highlighting the key activities, outcomes, and lessons learned. It also addresses the challenges faced during the project, including infrastructural limitations and external factors such as flooding, and outlines the steps needed to achieve the long-term goals of the Mukuru SPA project.

This Brief considers the criticalrole of finance in community-led and local government-led
urban development. Community-managed funds drawn from savings groups have long helped
low-income groups cope with stresses and shocks. Butthese funds have grown in scale and scope
and in their capacity to develop productive partnerships with local governments, in order to meet
basic needs and reduce urban poverty

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to an understanding of more inclusive
financing options for decent low-income housing with a specific focus on experiences
of housing improvements in Kenya’s low-income urban neighbourhoods. The paper
summarises the findings of a study of three community led housing developments in
Nairobi and Nakuru (Kenya). It has a specific focus on the affordability of loans given to
residents and on the speed of consolidation within these neighbourhoods.

This report documents the initial findings from an ongoing study aimed at providing an indepth understanding of land delivery processes in Mathare’s informal settlements. The study
is driven by the belief that systematically documenting rights and claims to land, and how
these play out in specific contexts, can lead to a better understanding of land markets and the
interventions required to ensure broad access to land. Capturing and documenting the various
interests in land can also contribute to effective spatial planning.

This review provides a situational analysis of how the politicization of the Gikomba market has
raised issues related to public land tenure versus the privatization of public land (often referred to
as “land grabbing”) and how the breakdown of the rule of law in land allocation continues to affect
the people living and working in these markets today.

The brief highlights the terms and conditions governing the titles issued, and identify different types
of breaches of the special terms and conditions of lease, occasioned by the grantees. It also analyzes
the constitutional and statutory provisions as well as case law that pertain to the different breaches
identified. Finally, it explores possible solutions and options that exist in the Constitution, legislation
and case law in addressing these land tenure challenges

The Nairobi City County Food System Strategy is a step in the right direction. This policy document, far
from acknowledging the need for placing more emphasis on urban food systems, provides an outline of
how to achieve tangible results. It, therefore, provides the necessary framework to address some of the
most pressing food and nutrition challenges facing residents of Nairobi, especially those in informal
settlements.

The primary purpose of this research is to obtain comprehensive understanding of the water
and sanitation, hygiene solid waste management (WASH) and housing and security of tenure
status quo in Ipusukilo settlement in Kitwe. The research seeks to provide a platform for coproduction of knowledge to guide the design of possible settlement wide developmental
interventions.
